PhD:
I worked with Xin Yao and Peter Tino for my PhD research, which is concerned with three main research issues in the study of co-evolutionary learning: (i) measuring generalization performance, (ii) understanding the relationship between generalization performance and diversity, and (iii) understanding how co-evolutionary learning scales to more complex problems. The PhD study contributes to each of these three research issues. First, a theoretical framework on generalization performance in co-evolutionary learning was established, which provided for development of generalization performance measures and their estimates. Second, the relationship between generalization performance and diversity has been studied quantitatively and that the condition where diversity can be exploited to improve generalization performance has been identified. Third, the co-evolutionary learning of more complex games has been studied in detail to understand how co-evolutionary learning scales to more complex problems (e.g., through IPD games).
